Bristol & District League

We have three teams that play in the Bristol & District League. This involves playing classical rated matches over the board against teams from other clubs in and around Bristol, with a time control of 80 minutes with a 10-second increment.

Matches take place approximately fortnightly for each team, starting at 19:30 and finishing around 22:30. The matches are played in and around Bristol from September to May, with home games being in the Richmond Building on Thursday evenings.

The League caters to a wide range of strengths, with titled players often playing in Division 1 and more casual players playing in the lower divisions.

All League players are required to have an ECF membership before their 4th game. Bronze ECF memberships cost £20 but students get their first year for free.

If you are interested in participating in the League, please contact one of our team captains. We always have room to give new players a chance to play.

BUCA
Every February, we compete in the British Universities’ Chess Association (BUCA) Championship, which is a national team event with 4-player teams in different divisions.

In 2025, we sent 3 teams, with 2 playing in Division 3. Our 3rd team won bronze in Division 5, and, in 2024, our 3rd team won gold in Division 4.

We welcome all interested players, only requiring the total amount of players to be divisible by 4. The cost of the trip in 2025 was £42 per person, not including transportation.

If you are interested in playing for Bristol at BUCA 2026, please contact a member of the committee.
